Chairman's Introduction

One Saturday morning back in 1990 a small group of eager 8-11 year olds from Berrow Church of England Primary School assembled at the Village Hall. Their enthusiasm, coupled with increasing numbers turning up each week soon convinced the accompanying Mums and Dads of a need for a village junior football club.

Berrow Boys Football Club was born and a successful application to join the Woodspring Junior League was made in 1991.

We now run teams from under 6 to under 16 and have approximately 170 boys and girls signed. This is a huge undertaking, run by a dedicated committee of which I am proud to be Chairman.

In 2001 Berrow Boys won a National Community Champions Award for their achievements in the community.

In 2003 we became a Football Association Chartered Standard Club. This was the key which led to the grant from the Football Foundation for the new Changing room complex, and to date we can boast over thirty Level 1 and two Level 2 Coaches with all age groups covered by CRB and First Aiders.

In 2004 we were awarded a special award by the Somerset FA for being the most progressive club in the county.

Unfortunately, in November of 2005 a fire destroyed our new changing rooms, but all matches were played and we hope to have our prestigious building back by December 2006.

The sad loss of the only-recently-opened changing rooms

The rebuild took longer than previously expected, but the "Phoenix Pavilion" was reopened in July, in time for the 2007-2008 season.

Berrow Boys are continuing to send new managers and coaches on courses to obtain or better their levels in FA coaching, which helps the children to enjoy varied and fun training sessions; this in turn should help us to reach our main objective in becoming one of the few Development Clubs in the county.

On the field, Berrow Boys have won many League Championships, Sportsmanship awards and three Cup finals. In 2006-2007 our U9s and U12s completed a unique double, winning both their first divisions and cup finals respectively. In the summer months, some teams continue to tour, not only in this country but now also abroad in Holland.

Our new venture this season is our first girls' team, at U12 level, and I would like to wish them and all our teams luck, and look forward to watching all the age groups throughout the season.

I believe that we will only continue to be successful on the field if we pay attention to our off-field activities. As a club, we must be professional in all the things we undertake, the most important thing being that the boys and girls who wear the Berrow Boys colours should enjoy themselves in a safe environment and at the same time display the highest standards of sportsmanship wherever they play.

We all, boys, girls, committee members and parents, have a responsibility while we are custodians of the club to see that the club continues to prosper for generations to enjoy!
